πŸ‘‹ Hey there,

Great to see you. Whether you're new here or a returning friend - grab your mug and let's dive into this week's topics.

πŸ”Ž Single Bean - Curse Breaker

While digging through the mod catalogues recently, I stumbled across Curse Breaker by Kwember. Not that I'm planning to build an RPG pack right now - too many other projects eating my time - but I know there are pack devs out there who chase exactly this kind of niche. Sometimes recommending the missing pieces helps massively.

This is an adventure mod revolving around curses and blessings. Every mob has a small chance to spawn cursed - slightly stronger, sure, but killing them risks cursing you with stat debuffs. Purify those curses and you absorb blessings that buff you permanently. It's a neat risk-reward loop without drowning you in complex systems.

The atmospheric pieces blend nicely into that RPG-exploration vibe. There's a Grave of the Forgotten Deity biome with custom blocks and decorations, plus the Fallen Apostle mob roaming around. And yes, there's a boss - the Aqua Regia - with custom attacks and animations. Nothing too flashy, just enough to give your exploration some weight and mystery.

Almost everything is tweakable via config files or the in-game Forge menu, making it easy to slot into existing packs without breaking balance.

A quick shoutout to (you might remember him from the Traces of the Fallen spotlight/interview) - he provided the models and textures, and you can tell the care went into every detail. Another example of how art quality doesn't correlate with download counts.

Tl;dr: A niche curse/blessing mechanic mod with atmospheric touches. Perfect for RPG pack makers hunting for that edge-case content nobody else noticed.

πŸ“ Barista's Special - Discord Isn't The Solution

Here's the thing about Discord - it's closed source, proprietary software. That means the data isn't searchable by the outside world. You have to be a member of a server to access its knowledge. And even if you're in a server? The search functionality is horrible. More often than not, you're just scrolling through walls of chat hoping something sticks.

Then there's the security angle. If a mod or admin account gets compromised (it's happened before), and they go nuclear deleting the whole server - everything vanishes. Same goes for individual channels being purged. No backup, no recovery, just gone. If Discord itself ever disappears one day, it takes the collective knowledge of all communities on it with it. That's a single point of failure I'm not comfortable relying on anymore.

The Atproto Spaces Alpha is Live

Atproto Spaces, formerly known as β€œthe permissioned data protocol,” is a new extension to atproto that enables non-public data. The alpha is now officially open. Here’s how to develop with it and what to expect as we work towards the full release.

This is why people behind projects like try a different approach. The data is held by the individual user. If you switch platforms, you take your data with you. Each app functions more as a display of the data stored "inside" each individual - think of it like carrying your own library rather than renting shelf space from a landlord who might change the locks overnight. What is the Atmosphere?

Now, I'm not pretending there's a 1:1 replacement yet. Voice and video features are still catching up. But I've been keeping an eye on projects like - even set up a test space for some of my own personal projects. Chat and thread creation seem solid so far, which is where most of the important knowledge lives anyway.

And honestly, Discord's recent decisions haven't helped. Age-verification demands, customizations locked behind Nitro paywalls, feature creep that prioritizes engagement over preservation. It's made me wonder if we're building community infrastructure on borrowed ground.

I've already chatted with about this, and it's been a recurring conversation for months. If I come to any more conclusions or hear news on how things evolve on these fronts, I'll probably write a fuller article on my personal blog. This is just the spark - the essay might get longer.

But the question stands:

Where do we store community history when the platform isn't designed to keep it?

Pumpkin Prep'

If you've been following 's work, you might have noticed him teasing a new Pumpkin Carving mod. Fully customizable carvings, zero new textures, everything data-driven. In prep for spooky season? Who knows. He showed that the carved pumpkins also have the classic overlay when worn on your head. My first response was obviously: "wait, can you wear an uncarved 'carved' pumpkin?" Basically blindfold yourself with it.

Guess what? It actually works. Now I'm just waiting for someone to beat the game blindfolded by a pumpkin. Challenge accepted? πŸŽƒ

Supersymmetry - but in space

banner for the new update

Supersymmetry - probably the most advanced GregTech-focused pack in 1.12 - received a massive update named "Moonshot". This is the long-awaited space update. It comes with vastly expanded circuit progression, new PvE faction mechanics, and of course the ability to design rockets and set up a permanent presence on the Moon.

I've been watching this pack for almost 3 years now, but too bad I'm way too busy with other Minecraft-related things that prevent me from actually playing the game. Maybe one day I'll finally get to play it.

Alright folks, that's the brew for this week. Thanks for sipping along. β˜•οΈ
