👋 Hey there,

Great to see you. Whether you're new here or a returning friend - grab your mug and let's dive into this week's topics. ☕️

🔎 Single Bean - Prodigy Tech CEu

Fresh off the press, this one's landing straight into our Sunday brew: Prodigy Tech CEu by Wizzerinus. This brand-new fork revives Lykrast's original Prodigy Tech with long-term support commitments, machine improvements, and quality-of-life tweaks that longtime fans have been waiting for.

Basic machines

For the uninitiated, the original Prodigy Tech runs on hot air - literally. It's a tech mod drawing from RotaryCraft and IndustrialCraft vibes but carving its own path with unusual materials and a defined tech tree guided by advancements. Everything's documented in a Patchouli book that unlocks entries as you progress. No worldgen, no visible markers cluttering your landscape - just pure machinery and progression.

The fork keeps that clean aesthetic while addressing the gaps that showed after development stalled on the original. Bug fixes, JEI improvements, and quality of life changes means pack makers can finally slot this in without worrying about unmaintained issues.

All machines available in the mod

Quick personal confession - I had fork ideas spinning around in my head too, but Wizzerinus grabbed the torch first. Now it’s just PRs on my end, so a win-win situation for all of us. Expect some contributor action from me soon.

Tl;dr: Community Edition fork dropped today. Original hot air power system stays intact, improvements were made, and the maintenance question finally has an answer.

📝 Roaster's Notes - Forks, AI, and Coffee Stains

Two things have been bubbling up lately that need proper airtime.

First - the AI surge in mod development. We're hitting a point where authors haven't written a single line themselves and lack the knowledge to verify what the bot spit out actually works. The result? Horrible user experiences littering the catalogues. Now the community spends more time filtering duds than finding gems. Same story with art - promotional banners, logos1, CurseForge thumbnails. We've got talented artists in the 1.12 Coalition ready for commissions. Drop them a line instead of outsourcing your branding to an algorithm.

Your mod deserves actual care.

One small ask - if you're using AI somewhere, be upfront about it in your descriptions. Let us know where and how. Don't make pack creators hunt for that info. Transparency goes a long way.

Second - fork culture creeping into our space. This one's personal for me. Recently my Ender's Modpack Tweaks mod got forked claiming to fix a rendering issue on Cleanroom Loader2. Problem is, there wasn't any issue with running the mod on the latest Cleanroom version at all.

Running EMT on latest Cleanroom Loader release - the health bar renders without any issue

They kept my MIT license (which does allow forking), but never published any source code - so even if the fork had real fixes, I couldn't backport them to the original. Later someone reported an actual rendering glitch, but turns out it had nothing to do with Cleanroom. It was a weird interaction with Scape and Run: Parasites3 instead.

Here's where I'd encourage everyone: before jumping straight to a fork, try reporting the issue first. That's even easier than a pull request and requires zero coding knowledge. Most devs will appreciate hearing about bugs.

If you do have code chops, throwing together a PR is the extra mile that gets issues fixed and released faster for everyone. Forking should be the last resort, not the first instinct. I won't name names, but if you're thinking about forking a maintained project for the same version and audience - reach out or submit a PR instead. Feature parity stays intact, everyone benefits, and the upstream doesn't fracture. I'd happily accept PRs for EMT rather than watch parallel repos drift apart.

This isn't unique to me either - I know other authors facing the same behavior, with some even switching to non-permissive licenses just to protect their work.

ModDex Needs a Coffee Break

, current leader of the 1.12 Coalition and creator behind moddex.gg, came to the community with a straightforward update. She's been covering hosting costs out of her pocket and is asking for support to keep things running through the end of the year. With a move coming up next month, development pace will slow for 2-4 weeks, though Saturday changelogs should continue regardless. There are no ad plans - she respects user privacy deeply and that commitment won't change. Big features remain on the roadmap, and ModDex aims to become something truly incredible.

Lost Contacts Found

On the communications front, there were some amusing moments after last week's episode. reached out to apologize for going silent the past few weeks - apparently he completely forgot he had created a Bluesky account. Shortly after, remembered he too has an account on the Atmosphere.

If I had a nickel for every time this happened with community members... I'd have two nickels. Which isn't much money, but it is odd that it happened twice.4

Either way, both are now lined up for interviews, so expect proper Roaster's Notes space for them in the near future.
