šŸ‘‹ Hey there,

Great to see you. Whether you're new here or a returning friend - grab your mug and let's dive into this week's topics. ā˜•ļø

šŸ”Ž Single Bean - AstikorCarts Deluxe

This week's spotlight isĀ AstikorCarts DeluxeĀ byĀ fullskele, building on issork's AstikoCarts mod and adding extras aimed squarely at modpack devs.

For those who never hitched a ride with the original: it adds three carts to the game. TheĀ Supply CartĀ is the veteran of the family - a double chest on wheels with room for a friend to sit on its back. TheĀ PlowĀ is the workhorse: fill it with hoes to till up to 3 blocks at once, or swap in shovels to lay paths between the interesting corners of your world. And theĀ Animal CartĀ is basically a boat on wheels, so your non-human companions can tag along on adventures without breaking a sweat.

TheĀ DeluxeĀ fork keeps all of that intact and layers new configuration options on top. You can define custom hoe or shovel conversions for the Plow, mark blocks as groundcover that gets destroyed when plowed, and even designate a chosen item to act as a plow with its own conversion rules. Nothing flashy on the surface - but exactly the kind of levers that let a modpack dev wire the carts into their own progression and world logic.

A couple of ideas of what those configs unlock:

  • Point a modded item at the plow-as-item config - say, a druidic staff - and suddenly your pack's progression items have a real mechanical job tied to terrain shaping and transformation.

  • With custom hoe conversions, tilled dirt could turn into modded farmland or special soil blocks to support new crops, letting the humble plow become the entry point of an agriculture chain.

Tl;dr:Ā If your modpack leans on exploration, traveling, or rustic logistics, AstikorCarts Deluxe turns a classic into a configurable toolkit. TheĀ vanilla+ experience stays while the configs give pack devs just enough rope to build something of their own.

šŸ“ Roaster's Notes - The Modpack Dev's Paradox

No interview this week either, I'm afraid - but the drought ends next issue, with both pending guests already lined up. Consider this the last rambling-over-a-cup before the regular roast returns.

In the meantime, a little revelation I had recently: after learning how to mod, working on modpacks suddenly became incredibly difficult. Funny, considering I've been more of a pack dev than a mod dev for most of my Minecraft time - making packs since 1.7.10, and later adopting Antimatter Chemistry and Volcano Block. It was a fork of an abandoned mod that pulled me into Java in the first place, and now that I'm part of a small mod dev team, the paradox kicked in. Whenever I sketch out a new pack idea, I quickly reach a point where writing one custom mod would be easier than stringing together 3-4 mods to semi-accomplish the same thing.

Yes, tweaker mods have come a long way - CraftTweaker exploded with addons, and GroovyScript basically lets you write Java inside a pack. But accessing the Minecraft source, distributing scripts cleanly, and the languages themselves still make a dedicated mod environment feel better. Lately I even write mine in Kotlin - a supercharged Java, minus the ternary operator, which I'm still mildly upset about.

I could talk about this much longer - and I will. Consider this a teaser for an extended version on my personal blog.

šŸ’¬ Counter Talk

Fresh Scenery Brewing

has been teasing screenshots of an upcoming biomes mod over the past weeks, and what I've seen looks promising - a refreshing alternative to the ever-present Biomes O' Plenty, which tends to dominate the scene. Variety in worldgen is always welcome, and this one looks like it could carve out its own identity. You can bet I'll be digging into it properly once he joins me for an interview.

A Special Appears on the Menu

Small housekeeping note: I'm not thrilled about usingĀ Roaster's NotesĀ for anything that isn't an interview, so the shop is adding a new item - theĀ Barista's Special. Think of it as the off-menu treat nobody ordered but everyone gets served when the barista feels like talking. Depending on the week, it'll either take Roaster's Notes' spot when there's no guest, or Counter Talk's spot when the community counter is quiet. Editorials, deep dives, or just me leaning on the counter mid-monologue - whatever the day's roast calls for. First proper serving next issue. The machine's already warming up.

🧽 Cleaning the Tables

Alright folks, that's the brew for this week. Thanks for sipping along. ā˜•ļø
